What Are Wisdom Teeth?

Wisdom teeth are the third set of molars, which usually develop sometime during adolescence. They are located at the very back of the mouth. Most people have four wisdom teeth, but some get more or fewer than that. Early humans needed these additional teeth in order to eat a rough diet, but advances in food processing methods have made the wisdom teeth unnecessary.

Why Do Wisdom Teeth Need to Be Removed?

It is important to note that wisdom teeth do not always need to be removed. However, they do in most cases. Dr. Hammond can evaluate your specific case and make a recommendation based on your unique circumstances.

If they are not removed in a timely manner, wisdom teeth have the potential to cause a number of complications, including:

  • Pain
  • Infections
  • Oral hygiene challenges
  • Overcrowding
  • Cysts
  • Tumors

The risks associated with wisdom teeth are higher if they are impacted (stuck fully or partially beneath the gumline).

What to Expect From the Wisdom Teeth Procedure

If your wisdom teeth have fully erupted from your gumline, the procedure should be fairly simple. We may lift each tooth with an elevator before grasping it with forceps and breaking the connective tissues holding it in place.

If the teeth are impacted, it may be necessary to create incisions in your gum tissue or break the teeth into pieces in order to extract them.

Whether your wisdom tooth removal is surgical or non-surgical, we will do all we can to make you comfortable during the procedure. For example, we may administer both a local numbing agent and sedation.

Recovering From Wisdom Teeth Extraction

Most people are well-recovered from their wisdom teeth procedure after 1 – 2 weeks. In the meantime, there are steps you should take to manage discomfort and lower your risk of post-op complications:

  • Take medications as directed by our team.
  • Get enough rest.
  • Eat a soft diet that is free of items that are crunchy, chewy, or hard.
  • Do not smoke.
  • Do not drink through a straw.
  • Call our office if you have questions or concerns at any point during your recovery.
